J&M Cafe Restaurant Review:
If there's a wait to be seated, and on weekends there probably will be, Stumptown coffee served in quirky mugs pacifies any impatience. Breakfast foods are the big draw, even through lunchtime. All the morning classics are offered, ranging from biscuits and gravy to homefries with melted cheddar and fresh salsa, Belgian waffles, egg scrambles, and hearty breakfast burritos. (Tofu may be substituted in egg dishes.) There's also homemade granola, and a fairly expensive bagel and lox plate. If breakfast dishes aren't what you're craving when lunchtime rolls around, try a tasty sandwich such as one featuring chicken breast with tomato jam, Fontina and fennel slaw. Or hedge your bets with a breakfast/lunch merger like the "Johnson family sandwich," a combo of Canadian bacon, cheddar, eggs and mustard greens topping a biscuit. There are cocktails to balance earlier doses of caffeine, most notably a 32-ounce Big Gulp of Hoover Shoats bourbon, peach purée and lemonade. J&M once didn't accept credit cards (an ATM is on the premises), but this policy is evolving. At present, credit cards are accepted at the counter. However, the policy on cell phone conversations hasn't changed: smartphone silence is required.
