J Restaurant | Bar sure has come a long way. No longer a simple, unassuming pizzeria going by the pedestrian name of Pizza Plus, this eatery still tosses pies and turns out grinders, but it also serves up an array of far bolder Italian stuff, like the creamy, flavorful signature pasta with pan-seared chicken and pesto called Chicken Riggies or salmon splashed with Grand Marnier. The décor follows suit: exposed brick and stone, hung art work, and a cool color palette dominated by black and brown make for minimalist sophistication. Which isn't to say it's not still casual; since J is a block away from Hartford Hospital, you’re bound to spy more than a few patrons in scrubs, especially during lunch hours.
