Jaan continues its emphasis on preparing modern French dishes with Asian spicings. It is very well done here, as in seasoned seared tuna tartare with daikon and shiso salad, and kid rib and fillet with a sharp harissa and fennel purée, or halibut fillet with powdered miso, purée of pumpkin, mushrooms and crispy shallots. Dishes like honey-coated duck breast with ginger confit leg come with a rich caramelized butternut squash and green tea noodles, all put together with great skill. The five-course tasting menu at £46 is a good introduction, and given London prices, is a steal. It all takes place in a gold and black dining room with low lighting, looking out onto a floodlit enclosed garden. All very seductive. And because it is not as well known as it should be and is off the beaten track, you’ll enjoy a meal where you can talk easily and eat at your own pace.
