You have to go when it’s open and it’s hard to find out past the Kalihi Shopping Center; the awning sags and the building needs painting. Still, you’re likely to find political and union power brokers sitting down in a back booth here, as well as other movers and shakers. Why? Because Debbie Leong faithfully cooks the way her mother-in-law taught here, and you can have the best lü’au beef stew in the Islands, or the best pipi kaula, or the almost addictive chopped steak and onions. This is place is a treasure, but not one that costs a great deal.
