It’s a bit tricky telling your boss you’re headed to a tapas bar at lunchtime in a buttoned-down business district. So, BARcelona emphasizes the conversational aspect of the Spanish small-plates experience. Bypass the Americanized lunch menu and the inevitable tortilla española in favor of paella, marinated anchovies and a downright seductive assortment of sausages; doing so, you’ll find that even without dipping into the selection of good Spanish wines, the tapas go down easily. Most nights a boisterous crowd stops by for a couple of drinks and nibbles, like garlic shrimp or mussels in spicy tomato sauce. The uninitiated may be surprised at how quickly the tab creeps up as the evening moves along, and how hard it is to save room for the pan-Latin desserts: flan, tres leches cake, vanilla crème brûlée and caramel-filled churros.
