Hometown boy Jonathan Justus and his wife Camille Eklof moved back to small-town Smithville and opened this Modern American cuisine restaurant. The menu changes frequently but always focuses on seasonal, local ingredients such as a goat cheese fritter salad or Campo Lindo chickens roasted until the skin is tawny-brown, served over caramelized fennel mashed potatoes. Everything is made in-house, from the still-warm loaves of peasant bread to the black walnut pralines that accompany the roasted beet and blue cheese salad. The last of summer sweet corn is turned into an ice cream to accompany pecan tartlets, made with Missouri pecans. The wine list is creative, and guests can opt for wine pairings in two sizes. The cocktail list, too, is full of topnotch quaffs, including a Piedmontese Pirate, made with spiced rum, Moscato d'Asti and fresh orange and lime juices.
