Mikaku Sushi Taro Restaurant Review:

One of Virginia’s secret treasures, this splendidly bright, serene, and welcoming Japanese restaurant serves as a real gateway to the Far East. A chorus of voices from the sushi chefs may welcome you as you enter, and from that point on the meal unfolds with high Japanese drama and above-average food. Sushi choices are seemingly limitless, stretching way beyond the for-American creations such as the Fantasy rolls of spicy tuna and spicy yellowtail, to embrace fermented soy bean rolls and yellowtail rolls, plus eel, flying fish roe, and scallop sushi. The restaurant’s regular menu keeps the theme going, with its offerings categorized by techniques: fried, simmered/steamed, and broiled/grilled, plus pickles, rice and soup dishes, and sides that include fried tofu. We loved the chirashi sushi, a symmetric arrangement of raw fish, pickles, ginger, and an omelet rectangle over vinegared sweet rice. For the fainthearted, management does offer a few all-American eats, such as a hamburger. But by and large, expect to find totally authentic fare.
