THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Peli Peli Restaurant Review:
THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Peli Peli offers the spicy flavors of chef Paul Friedman’s native Johannesburg. The restaurant, the second of two, has the largest collection of South African wines in America. As part of a trio of the Galleria’s high-end restaurants stretching off Westheimer Road, Peli Peli lives up to the glamorous surroundings with a verdant 40-seat patio leading to the entrance. Inside you’ll find a soaring, domed ceiling in the main dining room with elegant appointments and splashes of bright red offsetting the dark wood tables set with crystal. Peli Peli is the name of the birds-eye spice from Southern Africa and that flavor is reflected in the house seasoning found in everything from the salads to the entrées. Start with a “biltong” bowl of traditional cured beef or the lighter bowl of mussels. Entrées are heavy on thick-cut beef, large lamb chops and curried chicken, but we are also fond of the tiger prawns grilled in butter with the signature Peli Peli spice. There are plenty of vegetarian dishes, sticky desserts and lovely egg selections for weekend brunch, as well as a full bar.
