My Parents' Basement Restaurant Review:
Dave DeFeo and Tim Ensor partnered with Lawson Wright to open My Parents’ Basement in the former James Joyce, a handsome Neo-Tudor building that stood empty for about three years. Little was changed inside, keeping the look and feel of a classic pub with plenty of dark-stained wood. With Tim Hastings in the kitchen, the simple fare includes perhaps the best Philly cheesesteak we've ever had, right down to the melted Cheese Whiz that's de rigueur by some folks' measure and bread from Philadelphia. The Grilled Kimcheese sandwich comes with locally made Simply Seoul kimchi. Located around the corner from Pine Street Market, the restaurant dips into the artisanal charcuterie that comes from Rusty Bowers' operation. In addition to notable brews, especially from Avondale Estates' own breweries and other local suds crafters, you'll find a couple of Georgia distilled spirits. The only sweet is a house-baked cookie.
