A real Virginia tradition, Paynes isnt exactly a diner, but it fits into the category. Serving for decades as a pit-stop for truck drivers hauling into DC from rural Virginia, Paynes basic American home-cooking will make you feel as though youve dropped by Moms. The place even has squeaky front doors. Cook-owner Abdo serves breakfast---grits, home-fries, hot cakes, chipped beef or sausage gravy---and adds plain but hearty fare for lunch and dinner. Sit at the lunch counter or slip into a booth for a filling meal.
