The owners went to considerable expense to create what could have been a truly fine restaurant with a spacious bar, comfortable dining rooms on two floors, plus an intimate lounge on the second floor. And then the bar crowd came, lured in part by the beat of a rock band, now fortunately limited to Friday nights. On that night, diners virtually have to be running backs to push through the masses in order to score a table, and once seated, are overwhelmed by the roar of the gang at the bar and amplified beat of the band. They also get to pick apples from the several baskets of apples serendipitously placed for easy pickings. However, the name of the game is fine dining, and with the food being consistently good, 64 is a definite winner, with its service attentive and prompt, and the overall experience, even for those beyond dating age, a pleasant one. If possible, book ahead for a table in the upstairs front dining room. It’s favored by many of the celebrities who are 64 regulars. Our choice when finally settled in is the peppercorn crusted NY sirloin with cognac cream, mashed potatoes and tobacco onions, a virtual steal at $29.50.
