Known by regulars simply as Rick's, this charming Laguna Beach bistro has been serving California cuisine since before the term even existed. Lunch here is casual and the menu leans heavily on entrée salads, pastas and panini. Dinner, however, is a more formal affair. Start with the house-smoked salmon, which is served with olive crostini, dried tomato crème fraîche and fresh basil. Or go for the thinly-sliced beef served with an innovative tomato-horseradish relish and mascarpone toast. The seafood, steak and chop entrées are more traditional, like the bronzed sea scallops, spicy cioppino and Rick's signature Pittsburgh-style filet with Gorgonzola macaroni and cheese. The wine list features Sonoma and Napa labels almost exclusively. If you're not quite ready for dinner yet---or if you've already dined but don't yet want to call it a night---pull up a stool in Adam's Bar, where the martinis are topnotch and the atmosphere is convivial.
