THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Saint Restaurant Review:
The “nitery” known as Saint occupies the hallowed space of the former Café Budapest, a grand labyrinth of a basement with arches, angles and nooks aplenty. Though a few years old now, it still looks cutting-edge, its triptych of rooms evoking a velvet-draped bordello, a mod disco in silver and black and a glowing white spaceship vestibule, respectively. And though the buzz has died considerably, the rich and beautiful still take over in the wee hours. But they come to drink, not to eat. Thus one can hardly fault chef Rene Michelena, a bold talent, for abandoning his original menu of wildly creative small plates in favor of much simpler, far less interesting fare---essentially upscale bar food. Nonetheless, we’d just as soon go to his other restaurant, Domani, just two doors down, and repair here for cocktails afterward.
