Jill's Place Restaurant Review:

There's a lot of history at Jill’s Place. Formerly Shalhoob's, the site was one of Santa Barbara's top butcher shops and delis since the 1970s. So Jill Shalhoob grew up in the meat business and now runs a casual, home-style eatery dedicated to quality steaks, big portions and approachable prices. While the lunch menu is geared toward local workers on break --- no table service is offered; patrons order at the counter or pick up phone orders to go --- dinner draws all types. The Santa Barbara sirloin is probably the best seller, available in both eight- and 16-ounce cuts. The filet mignon, T-bone, New York and rib-eye --- all seasoned with a secret family rub --- have their followings, too. A sampling of grilled sausages shows off another favorite family recipe. There’s also lamb T-bone, served in three four-ounce portions; buttermilk fried chicken with garlic mashed potatoes and gravy; and very tender pork baby-back ribs. Other options include salmon or halibut dishes and varied salads and sandwiches. You can't go wrong by ending your meal with bananas Shalhoob, their take on bananas Foster. Jill's Place is small and the dinner crowd packs it early, so reservations are a good idea.
