Every town must have its central hub, and for Great Falls, this has become The Tavern, located smack in the center of things and a popular hangout for all the locals. It seems that no matter when you stop by this neighborhood site, crowds have gathered at the bar for a gander at the overhead TV and a few liquid refreshers. The cashmere set, however, heads to the dining areas, where they can find handsome salads; we enjoyed the Ranch Chop salad with an overload of greens, corn, cilantro, black beans, Jack cheese, tortilla strips, and barbecue chicken just as much as the Tavern Southern salad, a classic Cobb gone down below the Mason-Dixon line. Sandwiches are also sturdy favorites with the Tavern's renowned turkey burger, a crab cake sandwich, and its own Club being prime candidates. For the gents, such home-style dishes as meat loaf and barbecued ribs with fries and slaw add to the restaurant's obvious appeal. And then there are the desserts, gooey, all-American classic pies and chocolate cakes.
