Theodore Rex, Houston, TX

Theodore Rex Restaurant Review

About the restaurant & décor: Chef Justin Yu’s restaurant --- named for his nephew, not a T-Rex --- is much more relaxed and easygoing than his previous Oxheart. It’s the same tight space, just 28 seats, but the décor and the menu seem cozier and additionally comforting, respectively.

Likes: The homemade milk chocolate ice cream topped with candied almonds.
Dislikes: Reservations are hard to get; they open on the first of the month for the next month. But if you come early you can probably grab a seat at the bar.

Food & Drinks: The food is every bit as accomplished as Oxheart’s, but meat dishes are a focus and plating is straightforward. Though the offerings may change seasonally as ingredients are locally sourced, highlights on an early trip included the stewed beef cheek in warm pickle juice and the tomato toast as starters, followed by the Texas Wagyu steak roasted with radish and grilled green sides. Also on point is the Guinea hen with a tart onion salad. Expect beer and wine only, but the wine list is nice: check out a glass of the Brice Denay, Rosé Grier with the tomato toast.
