When chef Greg Topper left the trendy Ajax Tavern to start his own place, he didn't want to open yet another expensive restaurant where locals couldn't dream of eating. Instead, his vision was to offer good, fresh dishes conceived with a chef's sensibility at affordable prices in a no-frills setting. Topper's makes it a reality. He serves made-from-scatch soups, generous salads, house-made pizzas (he calls them flatbreads), moist rotisserie chicken and sandwiches made with really good bread, all accompanied by espresso drinks and a decent selection of well-priced wines, microbrews and even cocktails. We've seen Topper's creative streak come through in such specials as venison chili, grilled New York strip with Maytag blue cheese and pizza with truffle oil. Regulars also enjoy his popular Topper's Aspen Bowls, combos of seasonal vegetables, with or without meat, plus a choice of potatoes, rice, noodles, beans or polenta. They satisfy a hearty mountain appetite without breaking the bank.
