Turkey and the Wolf Restaurant Review:

About the restaurant & décor: You have to love a restaurant that unapologetically offers a fried bologna sandwich with mustard, mayo and American cheese on white bread. Such is the eclectic fare at Turkey and the Wolf, which visitors may have a tough time locating. Break out the GPS, because this place is indeed a find. It’s a tiny restored building way off the beaten path, replete with mismatched vintage china and flatware, mid-century kitchen tables and chairs, whimsical colors and cheerful exterior murals.

Food & Drinks: Chef/owner Mason Hereford honed his craft at Coquette in the Garden District. Don’t be fooled by his menu; it’s odd but smartly conceived, and much thought and imagination have gone into the food. Devilled eggs are topped with fried chicken skin and hot sauce, while a full-flavored cabbage salad includes roasted chili vinaigrette, lime, sunflower seeds, herbs, fried garlic and pig ear cracklins. The collard green melt sandwich combines Swiss cheese, pickled cherry and pepper dressing, and is finished with coleslaw. A fried potpie is also a possibility. Drinks are similarly funky; where else would you get a shot of bourbon and a pickle for two bucks during happy hour? A quite limited selection of wines is available by the glass. Dessert is vanilla ice cream with your choice of embellishments; we heartily suggest the magic shell and “tater” sticks.
