THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Ventanas Restaurant Review:

The forward-thinking team from Mexico City that brought alta cocina to San Diego has done it again with Ventanas. Fans of Candelas (the Fourth Avenue critics' darling) will swoon for chef Eduardo Baeza's sophisticated menu. Start with the refreshing taste of camarones rasurados (Mexican shrimp marinated in lime with onion, cilantro, jalapeño and avocado pearls) or the trio de quesadillas stuffed with zucchini flowers, mushrooms and cheese (served with guacamole, tomatillo salsa and salad). The tortilla soup (served in elegant tipped bowls) is complex---the white panela cheese, avocado and poblano chile strips add depth and character. The brocheta de camaron (skewered, grilled shrimp) are served with a light rice side dish that we adored---tender white grains mixed with cream and cheese, while the mango chicken combines a sweet, fruity sauce with salty serrano ham-stuffed chicken breast. Our choice for dessert is the caramelized goat's milk flan---it possesses a heartier mouth-feel than ho-hum silky versions; this rustic-style sweet is ideal for those who prefer a cheese course to sugary snacks.
