THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Zachary's Restaurant Review:
There seems to be a dearth of soul-food restaurants in New Orleans in spite of the African-American presence and traditions. Zacharys, along the Carrollton sections Mississippi riverfront, definitely fills a need. The bright, pleasant dining rooms and bar are spiffy enough to make us wish that the food was a bit more authentically soulful, but it should satisfy the seeker of home-style, traditional Creole. Some say the fried chicken is the best in the area. Plates of trout stuffed with crab meat or shrimp keep the regulars coming back. The greens are mushy, though, and the gumbo a bit thin, though its filled with the best quality hot sausage in town. The raised frame cottage, set back from an iron-picket fence, is easy to spot amid the dozens of storefronts on Oak Street.
