Blanket Bay is said to be one of Sir Ian McKellen's favorite properties. And while we don't know if the "Lord of the Rings" actor enjoys heli-skiing, it's certainly a big draw in this area. From July through September (winter in New Zealand), the slopes beckon downhill enthusiasts with pristine powder, and the resort offers an à-la-carte heli-skiing menu for people of varying abilities. In addition, flight-seeing excursions are available over Milford Sound and the World Heritage Fiordland National Park. Gorgeous views of the mountains and Lake Wakatipu can also be enjoyed from the lodge's guest room balconies or dining terrace — the latter is the perfect place to savor a glass of wine from the local Amisfield vineyards after an exhilarating day in the great outdoors.
