For visitors to the artsy Gulfport community, here's a welcome respite after perusing galleries and boutiques along Beach Boulevard. Backfin Blue Café fills several rooms of an old wooden house. Its dining areas and deck provide a homey atmosphere complemented by fairly traditional, and limited, menu selections. The signature dish is jumbo lump crab cakes. Appetizers include lobster ravioli with fire-seared red bell peppers cream sauce and portobello mushrooms. Spinach and mushroom salad with ginger vinaigrette and basil-stuffed, bacon-wrapped barbecue shrimp are stand-outs. An entrée that appeals to vegetarians is the five-cheese lasagna: portobello mushroom, spinach and a variety of vegetables, and romano, Fontina, mozzarella, provolone and Parmesan. The restaurant specializes in seafood but also offers prime rib and a generous serving of homemade meatloaf with a side of garlic mashed potatoes.
