THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED City Tavern Restaurant Review:
When John Adams arrived in Philadelphia in 1774, he called the City Tavern "the most genteel tavern in America." German-born chef-proprietor Walter Staib delivers authentic (and updated) Colonial classics to the table at the restored Tavern. (The original was razed in 1854.) Located in the nation's most historic square mile --- Independence National Historical Park --- City Tavern offers candlelit rooms, colonial-garbed staff and tables set with Paul Revere-style pewter ware. Try the West Indies pepper pot soup, house-made veal sausage with Pennsylvania Dutch-style sauerkraut mashed potatoes, or a tavern lobster potpie. Thomas Jefferson's sweet potato biscuits are especially flavorful. Enjoy Martha Washington's chocolate mousse cake for dessert and feel as if you dined with your forefathers. A pint of George Washington Ale will have the same effect.
