Trokay Restaurant Review:

Owner-chefs John and Nyna Weatherson are New York transplants, he from Daniel and she from Murray's Cheese in the West Village. They started off with Trokay Café and soon after relocated to this historic building in atmospheric downtown Truckee. A rock wall and reclaimed wood bring a warm, rustic feel to the space. There's a bar just off the entrance, then the main dining area and a staircase leading up to a semi-private loft, and a dedicated kitchen just for pastries. Guests can order à la carte or choose from the four-course, prix-fixe or ten-course chef's tasting menus, the latter usually lasting about three hours. A meal may begin with caviar with red onion, sieved egg, crème fraîche and brioche toast. There are baby heirloom beets and a cauliflower and sea urchin velouté. Guinea fowl with heirloom artichoke and fennel, or Alaskan halibut with herbed farro are additional dishes. Coconut Pavlova with tropical fruit and lemongrass may end the meal. Coffee is prepared tableside in a siphon pot; enjoy it with the mignardises. Old-world and new-world wines and sakés are available to pair with every plate.
