Nine Zero

Boston, Massachusetts - Hotel Review

Not So Boston Common

Boston is a city steeped in tradition and convention, with few contemporary hotel offerings. Among this exclusive group is the Nine Zero, a Kimpton Hotel that emanates a vibe found more often in New York and Los Angeles than in New England. Modern and hip, it boasts a stylish lobby with sumptuous fabrics, bejeweled chandeliers and artfully mismatched designer furniture. Its chic style continues throughout the property, with the use of bold colors, vibrant patterns and ample amounts of stainless steel, chrome and glass.

In the 190 guest rooms, vivid and striking décor is elegantly tempered by dark woods. Even by Boston standards, the accommodations are somewhat on the small side, though the bathrooms are giant, furnished in marble and featuring spacious glass-enclosed showers. Each bathroom is set apart from the rest of the room by an enormous sliding glass door that's not the most seamless thing to operate, but does save some space. Rooms on the upper floors offer stunning views of Boston's downtown; and guests who stay in any of the hotel's Premier View rooms take in this skyline via floor-to-ceiling plate glass windows. If price is no object, the Cloud Nine suite on the top floor is one of the best rooms in the city.

When it opened in 2002, the nineteen-story Nine Zero was by far the most innovative, avant-garde hotel to hit the Boston area. Today, it is perhaps the greenest hotel in the entire city. All cleaning products are environmentally friendly, printed materials are made from recycled paper and rooms feature recycling bins. Coffee is organic and fair trade. Other unique offerings, such as in-room yoga manuals and pet-friendly packages, also set this hotel apart from the pack.

Additional amenities include a hosted wine hour each night in the hotel's clubby lounge, free wireless high-speed Internet access and complimentary morning newspaper. There's a 24-hour business center, including fax, copier and messenger service, in-room spa treatments and a rather scant fitness center equipped with free weights and a couple of treadmills. But the hotel does offer complimentary passes to the Bally's Fitness club just down the street.

Nine Zero is by far the grooviest, most stylish hotel in the city, and its downtown location can't be beat. The Boston Commons are directly across the street, a T station is only a few blocks away, as is the tony Beacon Hill neighborhood. Boston is a walkable city anyway, but Nine Zero's central location makes everything feel even closer together. For travelers looking for an untraditional stay in one of the country's most traditional cities, the Nine Zero fits the bill.
