Tucked in between towering mountains and many miles away from surrounding cities, Mammoth Lakes, California, seems to be a hidden gem awaiting discovery. After driving for hours across desert and winding around the Sierra Nevada Mountains, suddenly appearing in the midst of this cozy ski resort community is both a relief and a surprise. Arriving at one of the rustic, spacious Snowcreek Resort condos is even more of a surprise. Whether you're visiting for a weekend or a month, finding the comforts of home far, far away from home is an unexpected delight and a welcome luxury.

The 450-acre Snowcreek Resort was founded over three decades ago and features more than 1,000 properties, from quaint one-bedroom townhomes to four-bedroom condos. While most properties are privately owned or available for purchase as real estate, over 200 are available for rent on a nightly, weekly or monthly basis.

Guests will find that the rental properties combine the best of both a hotel and a home. Traditional amenities include everything from the basics (fresh towels and personal care products) to flat-screen TVs and internet access. But these properties are far from generic and sterile like most standard overnight destinations — they feel more like a wealthy relative's ski lodge than a hotel. Guests will find fireplaces (a necessity for Mammoth Lakes' snowy winters), luxurious full kitchens, laundry machines, rustic furnishings and interiors made of rough-hewn timber that give each room a Montana-lodge-style atmosphere. Depending on the price and type of property, some rentals also come with garages, which guests will find stockpiled with firewood.

Although the condos are cozy, and it's tempting to just burrow in and enjoy gazing out the window at the surrounding open meadows and sky-scraping mountains, visitors should take advantage of their location in the middle of this huge, wild space. No matter the season, Mammoth Lakes is a paradise for nature lovers, and activities for guests are endless. Renters at Snowcreek receive complimentary use of the resort's Athletic Club as well as preferred green fees and tee times at the Snowcreek Golf Course. Outside of the development's boundaries, activities include mountain biking, hiking, fishing, horse-back riding, skiing and snowshoeing. On the area's namesake lakes, visitors can water-ski and wakeboard or simply rent a canoe for a leisurely sight-seeing paddle around one of these beautiful bodies of water.

Visitors year-round should make a point to visit Mammoth Mountain Ski Area, located at the base of an 11,053-foot-high peak, which offers a ski and snowboard school, equipment rentals and restaurants (including a partnership with the Patina Restaurant Group). Adventurers must take a gondola from the ski area to reach the top of the mountain — a scenic journey that is just as notable as the destination itself. After arriving at the top, mountain bikers can ride on terrain ranging from boulder-strewn ground to smooth dirt paths in the summer, while winter skiers can take advantage of the area's 400 inches of annual snowfall and try one of the available 150 trails.

Not all of the activities in Mammoth Lakes involve physical exertion, however. Wine lovers should plan on attending the annual Mammoth Festival, a three-day event in August that features live music, art, food, and wines from over 30 vintners from around the country.

After a long day spent exploring Mammoth Lakes, guests to Snowcreek properties can either prepare dinner in the full kitchen (complete with an outdoor grill), or visit one of the area's restaurants, such as French eatery Restaurant LuLu, or the Mammoth Brewing Company, which features a selection of its local brews on tap.

Whether your idea of a vacation is snowshoeing on a snowy mountain trail or taking a leisurely stroll around a beautiful mountain lake, Snowcreek is the perfect central location for any activity and provides luxurious touches that make you feel so at home, you may never actually want to go home.
