Balinese Treasure

A lifelong love of authentic Indonesian culture has led Anbar Setjadibrata to construct some of the most culturally rich hotels in Bali. His second, Hotel Tugu Bali, is set in the city of Canggu but tucked away amid green paddy fields. If the extensive collection of rare antiques and Indonesian art doesn't impress you, the full roster of guest activities may be the selling point.

Guests are invited to participate in Dance and Gamelan class, a workshop that teaches the dying, ancestral dances performed in Balinese culture—including Topeng and Barong. A cooking class features a trip to local fish and vegetable markets with the hotel's chef, Ibu Soelastri, and a lesson about the 1,001 Indonesian spices that pepper her mother's home cooking recipes. Chef Soelastri also demonstrates her culinary skills in the hotel's traditional Javanese kitchen. Learn the disciplined art of creating Balinese offerings, flower and palm leaf arrangements, or take a sunset tour by an antique, horse-drawn bendi cart. Active guests will relish in the Canggu Village bike tour and the fitness and tennis facilities at Villa Tugu—a five-minute drive from the hotel.

Dining options at include Bale Sutra, "the palace of Harmony," an 18th-century Kang Xi-period temple; Bale Agung, in the village of Bayung Gede, for a minimum party of 16 people; and traditional local eatery Waroeng. Up to 30 guests may also dine in Bale Puputan, a formal meeting and dining room decorated with antiques of Balinese royalty, and couples may order dinner by moonlight on the beach or by the lotus pond.

Tugu Bali may be the perfect escape, but your everyday needs and desires need not be sacrificed (unless the purpose of your trip to Bali was to watch television). Enjoy plunge pools in all ground-floor suites; private massage areas, sunken baths and ocean views in upper-floor suites; garden baths; in-room stereo CD and VCD systems; complimentary high tea; exercise room; freshwater swimming pool; library; games; nearby golf courses; arranged tours upon request and complimentary airport transport. Not to be missed is the Waroeng Jamoe Spa, featuring Javanese aromatherapy massage, full-body aromatherapy massage, women's pre-wedding traditional skin treatment, post-treatment bath in traditional herbs and spices, royal Javanese princess treatments and Balinese massage. Take advantage of the open-air massage pavilion near the rice fields and stop by the Javanese apothecary for herbal medicine after your treatment.

When the day is done, take in the splendor of the Balinese landscape and the surroundings rich in historical art and culture.
