Past the long bar with its embedded fibre optics playing light games, the restaurant opens out as a series of rooms, two at street level and the rather inferior one downstairs. Lots of glass means that even on sunny days the room is bright and airy, with large flower arrangements and a rather clever design which is both modern and classic. 192 is frequented by locals who treat it rather as their own club, into which you are welcomed on arrival with charm and efficiency. The menu changes twice a day and caters both for those in search of a three-course meal, and those who may only want one dish. Salads are popular, and usually come in a number of forms, seasonal as well as the likes of Caesar or Niçoise. Other starters might be a terrine, seared scallops or steamed mussels, either finished with a classic cream and wine sauce, or with something more Oriental. Main courses include lamb shanks with couscous, steak with béarnaise and spinach or roast sea bass with beurre blanc and celeriac purée. Desserts wander from classic English, as in bread and butter pudding or steamed ginger sponge, to more classic tarts, ices and sorbets. The wine list is extensive, with much to offer from around the world at reasonable prices and with a good collection by the glass. Set 2-course Mon.-Fri. lunch £11.50, Sun. lunch £12.50.
