Dark and cozy, with semi-circular booths, white linens and leisurely yet professional service, Acqua is the sort of place where you could easily impress a business client---yet you’d be wishing all the while you were on a date instead. The raw bar is the largest in Connecticut; an oyster pairing menu is well-wrought, enticing diners to wash down bivalves fresh from Prince Edward Island and Rhode Island with this or that Chardonnay or Gewürztraminer. While the main menu sports some intriguing selections from the land, like braised short ribs with port-stewed figs and polenta, seafood entrées are not surprisingly Acqua’s true strength. The grilled mahi is moist and flavorful, and balanced by the tang of mango salsa atop an aromatic bed of jasmine rice with a dollop of passionfruit-like lilikoi cream. Seasonally re-imagined diver scallops are always tender inside, seared crisp on the outside. Desserts, too, are rich and elegant; save plenty of room for the simple yet irresistible chocolate mousse bombe with hazelnut ice cream.
