Housed in the middle of Brea’s lively downtown district, Brunos Italian Kitchen is an open, airy restaurant punctuated with soft-colored woods and light hues. People take advantage of the comfortable vibe that straddles the line between metropolitan and neighborhood by popping in for a well-crafted, classic-themed cocktail before or after a flick in the adjacent movie theater. The Northern Italian cuisine, inspired by old-country recipes traced back to executive chef/partner Peter Serantoni’s Venetian roots, offers authentic flavors without a trace of gimmickry. We recommend the crunchy arancini loaded with prosciutto, smoked mozzarella and fresh herbs to kick off the meal. Pasta dishes such as the artichoke and burrata cheese ravioli and the pappardelle are comforting, while the pan-seared salmon with beer-mustard glaze and the flat-iron steak with roasted potatoes and tart cipollini onions display a keen sense of balance and composition. Those with a sweet tooth should try the caramel and chocolate ganache budino. A solid list of wines by the glass and after-dinner Italian liqueurs provides plenty of pairing options.
