Prime rib and sports enthusiasts have packed this Montreal landmark on the south side of the Lachine Canal for 70-plus years. Snuggle up to the bar, lounge on one of two outdoor patios, or just pull up a hefty wooden chair in the tavern where sports highlights flash and photos of local and international politicians, sports figures and media personalities from years gone by cram the walls. But regulars don't necessarily come here for the big game. It’s all about the well-seasoned roast beef. Start with the Club Magnan double-decker sandwich filled with finely sliced Canadian prime rib, or sample the ubiquitous ribs, filet mignon, tasty brochettes or burgers. Regulars usually opt to quaff the draft or bottled beer, but the wines flow from Mendoza, Argentina and Bordeaux, France (Mouton Cadet). Patrons also go for the porto and Champagne. The dessert choice is simple: order the traditional Québécois pouding chômeur (poor man’s pudding), a sponge cake drenched in maple syrup. Let it linger and then go for a nice long walk along the canal. The exercise also gives you an excuse to pop back in to pick up some roast beef, pepper sauce, pickles and sugar pie to go.
