Union Sushi + Barbeque Bar Awards
Wacky sushi and skewers have crowd appeal at this graffiti-decked hot-spot.
Union Sushi + Barbeque Bar Restaurant Review:
Sushi and skewers, the latter cooked on a blazing-hot robata grill, give crowds reason to queue up for tables at this soaring, graffiti-adorned Japanese kushiyaki bar with a group-friendly feel. A second-floor izakaya room caters to private events. Peer through the glass and watch the sizzling action, conceived by Worachai Thapthimkuna (ex-Sushi Wabi) and partner Mike Schatzman. Then, settle into the riotously colored space for over-the-top maki, like the Chesapeake Bay with fried oyster, black rice and garlic aïoli wrapped in collard green; grilled, prosciutto-wrapped scallops with wasabi-avocado purée and sweet plum sauce; and snacks like agedashi potato “tots” with daikon, ginger, green onion and bonito accents. A large saké list shows significantly more restraint, though funky cocktails --- like the Morning Glory #2 with Old Weller Antique, Pierre Ferrand 1840 Cognac, Demerara, Combier Liqueur D'orange, Angostura bitters and absinthe --- have plenty going on.
