THIS ESTABLISHMENT IS CLOSED It’s old-world elegance for the new-age at Backals, where contemporary American cuisine is served in a spacious and airy setting. A mosaic tiled floor, ornate crystal chandelier and Tudor-style fireplace coexist with banquettes upholstered in a geometric red and beige pattern, reminiscent of a revamped old country manor house. The Maine lobster summer rolls are light and crispy, while the pickled cucumber sauce adds just enough sourness and bite to the yellowfin tartare. Among the entrées, the braised short ribs in a Merlot sauce are rich and robust while the sweet-and-sour sauce of the glazed Chilean sea bass is a nice complement to the spongy texture and delicate sweetness of the fish.
