Branching out into the world of casual fare, Michael Symon’s namesake Bar Symon is the perfect mix of a high-energy sports bar and high-society brasserie. It’s the kind of place where gastronomes and happy-hour-seeking twenty-somethings can comfortably rub elbows over smoked almonds (instead of bar mix) and beer. Hearty sandwiches, like a pork pastrami sandwich and grilled cheese (made with Fontina, shaved onion and oven-dried tomato), run alongside entrées like honey-truffled fried chicken, vegetable potpie and smoked brisket. And while each of these offerings would top the menus of most other dining establishments, the real showstopper here is the aptly named Bar Symon burger---a moist, slightly sweet beef patty christened with fried egg and melted cheddar and served with a side of light, crispy fries. The restaurant has nearly 40 domestic beers on tap, many hailing from the Midwest, and you’ll find another 60 selections by the bottle. (Take that, 50 wines.)
