THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Baraka Restaurant Review:
Tiny, beloved Baraka changed hands in late 2007 and, though the velvety space has been uplifted and refreshed, its deep-red, romantic, gypsy-esque atmosphere remains. The most significant progression under the new ownership (a husband and wife team from the neighborhood) is in the kitchen, where skilled young chef Chad Newton (Postrio, Redd) is enjoying unleashed creative freedom. Newton’s confident, contemporary Cal-Med small plates and entrées feature striking technique, playfulness with optimum ingredients, and a consistent harmony of flavors almost incongruous with the intimate, neighborhood environs. We enjoyed a full ride through an impromptu tasting menu, Newton’s specialty, and suggest any diner do the same. Sweet onion soup is topped with approachable foam of Anchor Steam Porter from the brewery up the street. Slow-poached and seared octopus over warm fingerling potato salad is speckled with citrus chili aïoli, preserved lemon and olive-celery vinaigrette. Pristine house-made pastas present with bold, balanced flavors: braised oxtail, horseradish, saffron and wild mushrooms. If necessary, skip the generous desserts in favor of the savory, and don’t miss the famous sangría.
