Basil T’s earns its success: the food is fresh, seasonal and inventive, and the friendly staff works hard. The bar is lively if awkwardly placed in the middle of the restaurant and the dining areas are comfortable. Authentic Italian dishes such as zuppa di piselli (rich, thick pea soup) is made with pancetta and dusted with Grana Padano; Sunday Sauce (only offered on Sundays) is the legendary “Italian gravy," homemade with bracciole, Italian sausage and meatball with fresh rigatoni, peas and ricotta. The rarely seen delight scarpariello (the shoemaker’s chicken) is delicate, a pan-roasted and Frenched chicken breast accompanied by a hearty Italian sausage, fiery cherry peppers, and a sauce of red wine vinegar and capers. Fingerling potatoes and sautéed escarole are also on the plate. Basil T’s is a brewpub so the beer list is worth exploring, but so is the exclusively Italian wine list. Desserts are tempting, and you’ll want cannoli, of course.
