Bellaluna by Peppe Profeta helps solidify Kirkwood's position as a restaurant suburb. A veteran of The Hill, St. Louis' traditional Italian neighborhood, he's moved into a more modern mode and setting without losing his traditional touch. Pasta ala carbonara, one of his old signature dishes, now utilizes a flavorful duck prosciutto that lifts the dish to loftier heights. And spaghetti fritti, not common to local menus, is cooked pasta, sauced and then fried until the edges begin to crisp, a homey, casual dish in the middle of a white-tablecloth setting. Pork chops and filet mignon rise to the occasion. The suburbanite crowd raises the decibels in the two-level restaurant, but perhaps they're just talking about how lucky they are to have snagged Profeta for Kirkwood.
