THIS ESTABLISHMENT IS CLOSED A quick perusal of your neighborhood phonebook will likely yield numerous listings for Italian restaurants of the garden variety, and those operated by a seemingly endless array of very average Joes. Bice Ristorante is a Milan-based chain of upscale Italian eateries, and it brings a greater authenticity than most other chain-linked Italian operations. Located in the Tower City Center lifestyle complex, it is a polished affair: white-linen table dressings, striking frosted glass room dividers, gleaming tri-color hardwood floors, subdued lighting, and a white jacket-clad service staff. The kitchen is led by executive chef and native Italian Luigi Iannuario, who delivers a menu with a traditional Italian sensibility. However, much like the reserved décor, the food is often lacking excitement. The lunch and dinner menus feature an extensive list of soups, salads, sandwiches, pasta, fish, steaks and chops, including daily specials. A menu regular, the pappardelle al telefono features light and nicely al dente house-made pasta ribbons in a rich tomato cream sauce, punctuated by mozzarella and pungent basil. The minestrone is all too light, devoid of beans or pasta, yet the osso buco is classic Milanese done right: satisfyingly savory with generous moist, tender braised veal atop a fragrant saffron risotto.
