Bixby’s won’t challenge New York City’s status as bagel nirvana, but the assortment on sale in this shopping-mall niche, along with a nice selection of freshly baked plain-and-fancy breads, is more than adequate in Gumboland. Various spreads---ranging from hummus to chiles, to smoked salmon to blueberries---are available from breakfast to dinner time. Bypass the very ordinary soups and go instead for the roast beef sandwich with meat juices for dipping. A garlic mayonnaise gives the turkey club its zip, and shavings of a decent Parmesan make the Caesar salad worth the trip. The house-made pastries and cookies, especially the fruit tarts and chocolate items, are excellent. Ceiling fans, a tiled floor and a full-width front window make for a breezily cheerful atmosphere.
