THIS ESTABLISHMENT IS CLOSED In a city where the fiery dynamism of authentic Thai food is sorely lacking, Brown Sugar Café proves an exception to the rule. Mahogany doors frame a spare room that feels halfway charming once you factor in the black lacquer chairs, house plants, in-the-know customers and peppy cuisine. No regional surprises here, just the usual savory suspects that---for once---are done right by alchemic Southeast Asian spicing and market-fresh ingredients. Tom khar gai, the ubiquitous chicken-and-coconut-milk soup, is a balanced attack of lime juice, galangal, chilies and mushroom. The drunken noodles are among the most savory around. Curries ring true. And the chive dumplings provide pillowy comfort. Meanwhile, the leafy side-street location near the Fens makes Brown Sugar that much more of an escape.
