THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Budapest Hungarian Restaurant & Cafe Restaurant Review:
This is Clevelands other Hungarian restaurant. But thats only because its about 40 years younger than the first. And while the older one has the quaint charm of a pretty transplanted Hungarian café, this one looks like several Hungarian grandmothers living rooms exploded and all the pieces happened to land right here; it has a certain charm all its own. The long, narrow room with shiny gold wallpaper is lined with eight gold-flecked mirrors, each with attached candelabra. Dozens of framed photos and amateur paintings hang on the walls, along with lots of plastic hanging plants. The décor works because the food is so authentic and tasty, in fact, many of the menu items are marked with vohr (very old Hungarian recipe). Start with the Hungarian cucumber salad (marinated cucumber slices topped with sour cream) and the goulash soup. Move on to the veal à la Ligeti, veal cubes in white wine and veal gravy with red and green peppers, onions, Hungarian herbs and spices and sour cream. All entrées come with side dishes such as dumplings, red cabbage and rice with peas. Desserts include several types of palacsintas (many-layered filled crêpes), dobos tortes and strudels.
