THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Café La Rue at La Valencia Hotel in La Jolla traces its roots back to 1947, when it inhabited a space adjacent to The Whaling Bar. Several decades later, the dining areas have been merged to reinvent this European-style bistro. The bright décor features a central U-shaped bar, terrazzo flooring and Wing Howard's locally famous murals depicting street and park scenes in France in the 1920s. A brief breakfast menu and illy coffee is served in the mornings. Executive chef James Montejano's all-day dining menu kicks in after 11 a.m. with classics like mussels and French onion soup, continuing with sandwiches and entrées such as steak frites and trout with green beans, slivered almonds, roasted pepper sauce and romesco. A glass-enclosed vault houses the wine collection, and there are also local craft beers along with classic and specialty cocktails.
