THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Cafe Star Restaurant Review:
THIS ESTABLISHMENT IS CLOSED Sunlight streams through the big glass windows, illuminating polished wooden floors and a large wall of hand-cut Mexican glass in shades of turquoise, purple and vermillion. Dozens of bubble lamps hang from the high ceilings. The restaurant, in a gentrified stretch of East Colfax, offers well-prepared food to go with this convivial ambience. For starters, we like the roasted beet salad with goat cheese or one of the pizzettas---whether Mission fig with blue cheese or something more complex like smoked duck, caramelized onions, pears and mascarpone. Moving on, we find it hard to decide between the sherry-laced lobster-and-rock shrimp potpie and the crab-filled ravioli made with potato gnocchi dough. If you’re still hungry, we recommend the three-way pork (a grilled chop, wild boar cannelloni and cubes of smoked bacon with sweet potatoes) and the pan-seared diver scallops with truffle-scented gnocchi. For dessert, go for the chocolate-and-chili pot de crème---yes, you read it right! The wine list has reasonably priced bottles and nearly all of them are offered by the glass.
