The original owner of this downtown bar and grill also once ran the city's Checker Cab Company, hence the place’s name. It's jammed every lunch hour during the week with lawyers and government workers who roll in from the nearby city and county offices. Known for having some of the best burgers in Detroit, they are what Checker does best. Try one with homemade chili or blue cheese, or pile your own plain half-pounder with the fixings you prefer. You can't go wrong with the pocket burger either, seasoned ground beef spread on grilled pita bread covered with stir-fried vegetables and ranch dressing. Specials every weekday read like something from your high school cafeteria --- expect spaghetti and meatballs and Sloppy Joes. The setting is that of a serious burger bar --- one trimmed with photos of high-stepping Budweiser horses. Full bar with beer, mixed drinks and some wine offerings. Service is friendly and efficient.
