City Steam Brewery Cafe Restaurant Review:
Hartford's only brewpub --- in the 1877 structure that once housed Connecticut's largest department store --- lures locals craving house favorites like the Naughty Nurse, an amber ale, or looking to sample seasonal beer creations. Ask about the steam-powered brewing process, which is on full view. This friendly downtown spot serves mostly standard brewpub fare --- sandwiches, burgers, pizzas --- good for a quick meal or splitting appetizers with the gang before a game. We like the beer-battered cheddar chicken sandwich. And the menu really pleases all tastes, with everything from salty giant pretzels to omelets all day to steak and pork entrées. Factor in affordable prices, and you can't really go wrong provided your expectations are in check. The Brew Ha Ha comedy club downstairs is an added attraction, as is a large back pool room. Pair Bananas Foster spring rolls with a coffee drink before you call it a night.
