Don't be put off by Coyote Sam's location; for while this unassuming gem sits in a strip mall known for bargain groceries and dollar-only imports, the genuine Southern barbecue found inside is worth a special trip. Chef-owner Dennis Jefferson retired from a fast-food management job of 30-plus years to realize his dream of providing hickory-smoked, tender baby-back pork ribs, pulled pork, tri-tip and chicken to his friends and neighbors. In the classic Southern style, he does not stop with his exceptional, house-made, sauce-slathered meats, but includes cornmeal-fried fish and batter-fried chicken. The brave-of-heart, or a party of four willing to share, should definitely attempt the Sheriff's Plate---an unending platter of fried catfish, whiting, snapper, cod, shrimp and oysters. Side dishes include traditional collard greens, candied yams, cole slaw, baked beans or red beans, and rice. No formal service---you order at the counter and wait for your name to be called. Make sure to save room for sweet potato pie or peach cobbler.
