Culpepper Steak House is a chicken-fried steak-hamburger-beer institution turned into an upscale Texas-meets-Colorado lodge with winding patios, a bar with a massive rock fireplace and live entertainment, and a rabbit warren of rooms for dining. The menu is cleverly designed to entice locals to venture beyond surf 'n' turf but without any wacky dishes with weird ingredients and a mishmash of flavors that turn off a lot of people who just want a really good steak. The iceberg wedge salad is a clear winner: a big chunk of lettuce covered in a creamy buttermilk dressing infused with blue cheese and crispy bits of applewood-smoked bacon. Meats are smoked on the premises, so be sure to try the smoked grilled quail and baby-back ribs. Steaks are big, juicy and properly cooked and served with a selection of flavored compound butters.
