With its rustic interior, blackboard menu, wide-open kitchen, and clustered wooden tables, Forlano's Market & Restaurant looks like a 1920’s kid who has somehow grown up a few decades. Why? The chef, Nick Forlano, is something of a local celebrity who supports area farmers, operates a catering business and a bakery and butchery, holds tasting menu events, runs regular cooking classes, and serves elegant fare to a very discerning clientele who may live on a farm but has very citified tastes. Lunches are casual affairs with bowls of soup such as his renowned mushroom soup and hefty sandwiches that may include an Angus steak wrap or an Italian hoagie with pepperoni and cheese. You may even find a baked frittata, depending on the chef’s take of the day. Bread pudding, crème brûlée, or a baked berry crisp could be among desserts. Dinners are fancier --- think stuffed quail, osso buco, or a wine-braised cut of beef. Regular wine tastings usually feature drinks from local vineyards.
