Frank Pepe's Pizzeria Napoletana Restaurant Review:
Pizzerias are now ubiquitous: even Pepe's has locations scattered across Connecticut and beyond. But when Italian immigrant Frank Pepe installed a brick oven and opened a storefront apizza (pronounced "ah-beets") parlor in the heart of New Haven's Little Italy back in 1925, when pushcart vendors were the rule, he made history. Today, visitors still make pilgrimages to the original Pepe's for a taste of the family's legendary pies, known for their thin yet doughy Neapolitan-style crust. Bring friends, so you can sample everything from the most basic (red sauce and grated Parmesan --- don't assume mozzarella will be added unless you specifically ask for it) to the garlicky white pizza loaded with fresh-shucked clams that is the absolute standout. Beer, wine and soda are available.
