Like the name says, the specialty here is giant sandwiches: probably the most enormous grinders you'll ever have the pleasure of eating. And that's what has made this South End storefront eat-in/take-out grinder/pizza joint a Hartford institution. Friendly, generous, Giant Sandwich (formerly known as Giant Grinder) has a devoted clientele, always ready for a big pile-up of salami, capicola and provolone. Line up, bark out your order, and shuffle down the line as your grinder, built on a fluffy Italian roll, is assembled while you watch. Especially good are the pepper and egg grinders, chicken cutlet, beef cutlet and meatball grinders. The shop makes thick-crust pizza, which you can order whole or by the slice. There's also ziti and ravioli, which come plain or with meatball, cutlet or sausage. Need a 4- or 6-foot sub for a party? Order at least 24 hours in advance. Beer, wine and soft drinks are available.
